What will your rewire cost?

Six quick taps. You see our price range for your home and whether it sounds like a full rewire, a partial one, a new fuse board or an inspection first. Want a written price? One Safe Electric registered electrician who covers your county rings you.

Step 1 of 7

What kind of home is it?

Pick the closest.

How many bedrooms?

Size is the biggest thing in the price.

When was it built, or last rewired?

A rough guess is fine. The age of the wiring matters more than the age of the house.

Do you see any of these?

Tick all that apply.

The whole house, or part of it?

A partial rewire only makes sense when the rest is sound.

Will you be living in it during the work?

An empty house is quicker and costs less.

Our price range

€7,000 to €14,500

A full rewire of a 3-bed house: new cables, a new fuse board, testing and the Safe Electric certificate.

Answer the six questionsYou'll see whether it sounds like a full rewire, a partial one, a new fuse board or an inspection first.
  • About 4 to 10 days on site for a 3-bed house.
  • A new fuse board on its own: €350 to €1,400.
  • An inspection and report: €150 to €350.
  • A guide, not a quote. The written price comes after the electrician has seen and tested the house.

The week

What a lived-in rewire is like

  • Dust. Cutting channels in walls makes a lot of it. Good electricians sheet up and tidy every evening, but no one can make it dust-free.
  • Floors up. Floorboards are lifted to run cables, a room or two at a time.
  • Power off in parts. The work goes circuit by circuit. A circuit is usually kept live overnight so the fridge, freezer and some lights stay on.
  • Board day. Swapping the board means the main switch off for part of a day.
  • Rooms out of use. Expect one or two rooms to be cleared at a time.

Empty or lived in

Is it worth moving out?

If you can, it's quicker and costs less: an empty house can be done in one pass. Living in adds about 15 to 20% and a few days, because the work is phased. If you're buying a house that needs rewiring, the time between getting the keys and moving in is the easiest time to do it.

Questions

Questions people ask

Do I have to move out for a rewire?

No. Most rewires can be done with people living in the house, room by room. It's slower and dustier, and costs a little more.

Will I have power at night?

Usually. The electrician keeps a circuit live overnight so the fridge, freezer and some lights stay on, except around the day the board is changed.

Is it safe for children and pets?

The crew should isolate what they're working on, but cables, tools and open floors are hazards. Keep children and pets out of the rooms being worked on.

How much more does living in it cost?

About 15 to 20% more than an empty house, for the extra time.
