What will your rewire cost?

Six quick taps. You see our price range for your home and whether it sounds like a full rewire, a partial one, a new fuse board or an inspection first. Want a written price? One Safe Electric registered electrician who covers your county rings you.

Step 1 of 7

What kind of home is it?

Pick the closest.

How many bedrooms?

Size is the biggest thing in the price.

When was it built, or last rewired?

A rough guess is fine. The age of the wiring matters more than the age of the house.

Do you see any of these?

Tick all that apply.

The whole house, or part of it?

A partial rewire only makes sense when the rest is sound.

Will you be living in it during the work?

An empty house is quicker and costs less.

The stages

What happens, in order

  1. Survey and plan. The electrician tests what's there, agrees where every socket, switch and light goes, and books ESB Networks if the supply needs to be cut off and reconnected.
  2. First fix. Floorboards come up, channels are cut in the walls, and the new cables are run back to where the board will be. This is the dusty part and the longest.
  3. Making good. The channels are filled and plastered, usually by a plasterer.
  4. Second fix. Sockets, switches, lights and the new board go in.
  5. Test and certify. Every circuit is tested, and the Registered Electrical Contractor issues the Safe Electric completion certificate.

Questions

Questions people ask

How long does it take to rewire a 3-bed house?

4 to 10 days on site. An empty house is at the quicker end.

How long is the power off?

In an empty house, it can be off for days. In a lived-in house the electrician works room by room and keeps a circuit live overnight, so it's a few hours at a time, plus part of a day for the board.

Does the plastering add time?

Yes. Filling the channels and plastering comes between first and second fix, and painting after.

Can it be done in stages?

It can, but it costs more overall, because the floors and walls are opened more than once.
